President Donald Trump directed the President’s Working Group on Digital Assets to include XRP, SOL, and ADA in the country’s strategic crypto reserve.

  • Trump later expanded the national cryptocurrency reserve to include Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH).

  • The inclusion of XRP, Solana, Cardano, and Ethereum started a debate, with Bitcoin maximalists arguing that only BTC should be considered a national asset.

  • The President’s Working Group on Digital Assets is now responsible for establishing regulations on the acquisition, storage, and management of these digital assets.

Losses to crypto scams, exploits and hacks totaled close to $1.53 billion in February, with the Bybit hack accounting for the lion’s share of losses.

  • The Feb. 21 attack on Bybit by North Korea’s Lazarus Group was the largest crypto hack ever, surpassing the $650 million Ronin bridge hack from 2022.

  • February saw a nearly 1,500% increase in crypto losses from January, with total losses reaching over $126 million even when excluding Bybit’s hack.

  • The second-largest incident was the $49 million hack on Infini, where an attacker with prior involvement in its contracts exploited retained admin rights.

Metaplanet bought another 156 Bitcoin on March 3, after its CEO said the firm is exploring a potential listing outside of Japan.

  • Metaplanet purchased 156 more Bitcoin for $13.4 million on March 3, bringing its total holdings to 2,391 BTC.

  • So far, the company has invested $196.3 million in Bitcoin at an average price of $82,100 per BTC.

  • CEO Simon Gerovich is also exploring a potential listing outside Japan, and met with NYSE and Nasdaq officials to expand investor accessibility.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently voiced his support for Roger Ver, who is facing tax evasion charges in the US.

  • Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin publicly supported Roger Ver, who faces extradition to the US over alleged tax evasion after being arrested in Spain.

  • Buterin called the case "absurd" and "politically motivated," and criticized the US tax system for its global taxation and strict exit tax policies.

  • Ver is backed by a number of well known people in the industry like Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht. Ver was charged by the DOJ on April 30, 2024, and released on a $163,000 bail after weeks in a Spanish prison.
