🏦 European Central Bank President Dismisses BTC as Viable Reserve Asset

Christine Lagarde, President of the ECB, dismissed the possibility of Bitcoin (BTC) being included in central bank reserves.

• Lagarde ruled out Bitcoin as a reserve asset, mainly due to the need for liquidity, security, and safety in central bank reserves.

• Her statements were made after Czech National Bank Governor Aleš Michl's suggestion to consider Bitcoin for diversification. This was one of the ECB’s first explicit rejections of BTC as a reserve asset.

• The global push for Bitcoin as a reserve asset is growing, and US lawmakers from states like Texas, Utah, Illinois, Wyoming, and Arizona are already introducing proposals for Bitcoin stockpiling.

⚖️ Pump.fun Hit with Suit Claiming All Meme Coins are Securities

Meme coin launchpad Pump.fun was hit with a class-action suit that alleges every token it helped make is an unregistered security.

• The lawsuit was filed by Diego Aguilar in a New York federal court, and accuses Pump.fun of using guerilla marketing to create artificial urgency for volatile tokens, which led to big retail investor losses.

• Additionally, the suit claims that Pump.fun collaborates with influencers to market unregistered securities, and called its operations as a modern evolution of Ponzi and pump-and-dump schemes.

• In mid-January, US law firm Burwick Law also announced legal action against Pump.fun, alleging investor losses from meme coin rug pulls and unfulfilled promises.

⚡️ Tether Expands USDT to Bitcoin Via Lightning Network Integration

Tether is integrating its USDT stablecoin with Bitcoin’s Lightning Network by using the Taproot Assets protocol.

• Tether is expanding onto Bitcoin through the Lightning Network by using the Taproot Assets protocol. The integration was announced by Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino and Lightning Labs CEO Elizabeth Stark at the Plan B conference in El Salvador.

• The goal of the integration is to enhance transaction speed and reduce costs, which makes USDT payments much more accessible worldwide.

• Businesses already accepting Bitcoin via the Lightning Network can seamlessly integrate USDT. This could give stablecoin adoption a nice boost in certain regions with volatile local currencies.

💸 Crypto Hacks Drop 44% YoY in January, CeFi Top Target with $69M Loss

Crypto hackers stole more than $73 million worth of digital assets across 19 incidents in the month of January.

• Crypto hackers stole over $73 million in January, which is a 44% drop from the $133 million that was stolen in January of 2024. However, it is still a ninefold increase from December’s $3.8 million.

• The biggest attack targeted Singapore-based exchange Phemex, which resulted in over $69 million in losses.

• Centralized finance (CeFi) platforms accounted for 93% of total losses, with over $69 million stolen from CeFi platforms in January of 2025.
